The city at its own pace
A tuk-tuk, a driver who lives here, three hours, and no monument tickets. This is the tour for the day after you have done the forts — Jaipur as a working city rather than a set of sights.
Morning or evening — they are different tours
Morning is temple bells, prayers, flower sellers stringing marigold for the day's offerings, and the vegetable markets at their freshest. The pink walls take the low sun and the streets are still quiet.
Evening is the opposite: bazaars lit up, chai stalls busy, the old city at full volume, and the light going gold across the facades.
Pick according to whether you are a morning person. Both are three hours and both start at your hotel.
Temples
Jaipur's temples do not appear on the standard circuit and they are where the city actually goes.
Govind Dev Ji, in the City Palace gardens, is the most loved — the image of Krishna was brought here from Vrindavan to keep it safe from Aurangzeb, and seven aartis are performed daily to a hall that fills for each one. The maharaja built his own palace so he could see the deity from his window.
Others depend on the day and the hour: the small Shiva temples in the lanes, the Hanuman shrines, and the Kalki temple opposite Hawa Mahal dedicated to an avatar of Vishnu who has not yet arrived.
The lanes
Between temples the tuk-tuk works through the old city grid — Chhoti Chopad, Badi Chopad, the flower mandi, the bangle lanes, the spice sellers. Narrow enough that a car cannot follow.
What to know
Shoes come off at every temple, shoulders covered, no photography inside the shrines. Your driver will hold your bag or you can leave it in the tuk-tuk.
