The most photographed spot in Jaipur is not a fort.

Patrika Gate is the ninth gate of Jawahar Circle, and it is the one every Jaipur photograph you have scrolled past was probably taken at. Unlike the sandstone forts, this is painted inside and out: every arch, pillar and ceiling covered in frescoes showing Rajasthan's regions, its festivals, its crafts and its architecture. Walk through and the colour changes with each bay.

It was completed in 2016, so it is not a heritage monument. What it is, is the single best place in the city to understand Rajasthani decorative painting in one continuous run, and to photograph it without a crowd if you come early.

Jawahar Circle surrounds it, and at 30 acres it is one of the largest circular parks in the country, laid out as a rose garden with a jogging track. In the evening the musical fountain runs, which is exactly the sort of ordinary local outing that shows you what a city is actually like when it is not performing for visitors.
