Four and a half hours, and what honestly fits into them

A half day in Jaipur is a real choice rather than a compromise, provided you know what it covers. This one runs the old-city cluster and the road out to the lake — City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal — with Amber Fort included on the longer options.

It suits an arrival day, a departure morning, or the second day of a two-day stay after the forts are done.

City Palace

Built from 1729 by Jai Singh II at the centre of his new city, and part of it is still the royal family's residence — the flag over Chandra Mahal tells you whether they are in.

Courtyards, the armoury, the textile galleries, and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas: the largest silver objects in the world, made so a maharaja could carry Ganges water to England for a coronation.

Jantar Mantar

Next door, and UNESCO-listed: nineteen masonry astronomical instruments built in the 1730s. The Samrat Yantra is a 27-metre sundial still accurate to about two seconds, and the instruments that track planetary positions still work. Your guide can demonstrate them, which is the difference between a field of shapes and an observatory.

Hawa Mahal

The five-storey lattice of 953 windows, built in 1799 so the women of the court could watch street processions without being seen from the road. Less than a metre deep for most of its height — a screen, not a palace. Morning light is when it goes properly pink.

Jal Mahal

From the causeway over Man Sagar Lake. Four of its five storeys are submerged and nobody goes in.
