Sometimes this is what you actually want: a vehicle and somebody who knows the city, and nobody telling you what to look at. It suits shopping days, business visits, families with small children, and anyone who has already had enough guided commentary.

What a Jaipur driver is actually useful for

Parking, which is the real problem at Amber and in the old city. Knowing that the flower market finishes at eight and Nahargarh is worth doing at sunset. Waiting outside a shop for an hour without complaint.

And, if you ask, telling you where to eat — which will be better than anything in a guidebook.

What is not included

A guide. If you want the history explained, book a guided tour instead or add a licensed guide separately — a driver is not permitted to guide inside monuments and a good one will tell you so.

Entrance fees, parking charges at some sites, and tolls if you leave the city.

Useful to know

Amber Fort, Jaigarh and Nahargarh are 11 to 15 km out, so the 80 km allowance covers the standard circuit comfortably. A run to Abhaneri or Pushkar needs a separate booking.

For shopping, say so at the start and ask to be taken where locals buy rather than where shops pay commission. Drivers do receive commission at some emporiums, and a direct request is usually respected.
