Amber Fort

The drive out is eleven kilometres past Jal Mahal on the lake.

The fort was begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh in the pale sandstone of these hills. The Ganesh Pol gateway is what everyone photographs. The Sheesh Mahal behind it is why you go inside: convex mirror fragments set across the ceiling and walls so that one candle would fill the chamber with points of light.

The zenana courtyard is the part with the best story — twelve queens' apartments arranged around a single yard, with corridors placed so the maharaja could visit one without any of the others knowing.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop from the causeway. Four of its five floors are submerged; there is no boat and no entry.

City Palace

Courtyards, the armoury, the textile rooms, and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas — the largest silver objects in the world, made so a maharaja could take Ganges water to England.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen stone instruments, UNESCO-listed, including the 27-metre Samrat Yantra sundial that still reads to about two seconds. Worth a guide; without one it is a field of shapes.

Hawa Mahal
