Car or tuk-tuk, and the honest advice on which

The same route, two very different days.

A tuk-tuk is open on both sides, fits down lanes a car cannot enter, and from October to March it is simply the more enjoyable way to move through Jaipur. You smell the flower market, you hear the street, and you are part of it rather than watching through glass.

A car is air-conditioned, and from April to June that is not a luxury — it is the difference between a good day and a heat headache by two o'clock.

The day

Seven hours from hotel pickup, with a guide who will shape it around what interests you.

City Palace — Rajasthani and Mughal architecture around courtyards, part of it still the residence of the former royal family. The armoury and the textile rooms reward slowing down.

Jantar Mantar — a UNESCO site of nineteen masonry astronomical instruments built by Jai Singh II, an astronomer who founded cities as a side occupation. The Samrat Yantra is 27 metres of stone and still reads local time to within about two seconds, which your guide can demonstrate.

Hawa Mahal — the honeycomb screen of 953 windows on Sireh Deori Bazaar, built in 1799 so that the women of the court could watch the street processions without being seen from them.

Amber Fort — the hilltop complex above Maota Lake, with the Ganesh Pol gateway and the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber.

Jal Mahal — a photo stop on the causeway; four of its five storeys are underwater.
