The tickets are the part that catches people out in Jaipur: Amber Fort, City Palace and Jantar Mantar together run about ₹1,500 per foreign adult, each with its own counter. This includes all of them, plus the car and an English-speaking guide for eight hours.

Amber Fort

The hilltop fortress in the Aravalli hills above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general — which is why a Rajput fort carries Mughal inlay work.

The gateways and courtyards climb the ridge. The Ganesh Pol is the painted one everyone photographs; behind it the Sheesh Mahal, where thousands of convex mirror fragments set into the ceiling turned a single candle into a sky full of stars.

The Sukh Niwas across the courtyard was cooled by water running through channels cut in the marble walls. And the zenana: twelve queens' apartments around one courtyard, with the corridors arranged so the maharaja could visit one without the others knowing which.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop on the causeway. Four of its five storeys are under Man Sagar Lake and there is no way in — no boat, no ticket, whatever you are offered at the roadside.

City Palace

Still partly the residence of the former royal family — the flag over Chandra Mahal tells you whether they are in. Courtyards, the armoury, the textile galleries, and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas: the largest silver objects in the world, cast so a maharaja could carry Ganges water to England.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments built by Jai Singh II, who was an astronomer before he founded a city. UNESCO-listed, and the 27-metre Samrat Yantra sundial still reads local time to within a couple of seconds — your guide can demonstrate it.
