Full description

The standard circuit, plus a valley of flowers

The difference between this and every other Jaipur day tour is the last stop: Kanak Vrindavan, known locally as the flower valley, a restored 18th-century garden and temple complex in the gap between the Nahargarh and Amber hills.

Jai Singh II built it in 1707 on a site chosen because it reminded him of Vrindavan, Krishna's country. Terraced gardens, fountains, marble temples and a great deal of bougainvillea, with Jal Mahal's lake on one side and the hills closing in on the other. It is a favourite film location and almost no foreign visitor goes.

The rest of the day

Amber Fort on its ridge above Maota Lake, begun 1592 — the Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber, and the water-cooled Sukh Niwas.

The day is customisable — swap in Nahargarh for sunset, or the bazaars, or a stepwell, and your guide will rebuild the order.

By air-conditioned car, which is the right call from April onward and on any day you intend to be out for the full eight hours.
