Morning: Amber Fort

The drive out is eleven kilometres, past Jal Mahal on the lake.

The fort was begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general, in the pale sandstone of these hills. The Ganesh Pol gateway is painted plaster over stone and is the photograph everyone takes. The Sheesh Mahal behind it is the reason to go inside: convex mirror fragments set across the ceiling so that one candle read as a sky full of stars.

Across the courtyard, Sukh Niwas, where water ran in channels through the marble walls to cool the room — the only air conditioning of the 16th century.

Midday

Jal Mahal on the causeway for photographs. Four of its five floors are under Man Sagar Lake, and nobody goes in.

Afternoon: the old city

City Palace — courtyards, the armoury, the textile rooms, and the flag over Chandra Mahal that tells you whether the former royal family is in residence.

Jantar Mantar — nineteen masonry instruments built by Jai Singh II, a ruler who was an astronomer first. The 27-metre Samrat Yantra still tells the time to about two seconds.

Hawa Mahal — 953 windows, five storeys, and less than a metre deep for most of its height. A screen for the zenana, not a palace.
