The practical Jaipur tour: a private air-conditioned car, a local guide, and a route sized to how much time you actually have.

Half day covers the city palaces — City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal — which sit close together inside the walled city and work well in a morning.

Full day adds Amer Fort, which deserves two to three hours on its own, plus Panna Meena ka Kund below it and Nahargarh or Jal Mahal depending on the light.

What is worth knowing at each

At Amer, the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber and the water-cooled Sukh Niwas. At City Palace, the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas — the largest single silver objects ever made, built so a maharaja could take Ganges water to England in 1901. At Jantar Mantar, the 27-metre sundial that is still accurate to two seconds. At Hawa Mahal, going inside rather than photographing it from the road, which is what most people do and what gives you the view out through the 953 windows.
