Half a day does the old city — City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal — or Amber Fort and the road out to it. Not both, whatever the itinerary promises.

A full day does both, with time inside rather than a walk-through, and room for the bazaars.

Amber Fort

Eleven kilometres north on a ridge above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh — a Rajput fort built with Mughal craftsmen, which is why Persian inlay sits next to Hindu carving.

The Ganesh Pol gateway is the postcard. The Sheesh Mahal behind it is the reason to go in: mirror fragments set across the ceiling so that one flame would fill the chamber with light. And the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water in channels through its walls.

City Palace

Mughal and Rajput architecture across courtyards, part of it still lived in by the former royal family.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments, UNESCO-listed, with a 27-metre sundial still accurate to about two seconds. Worth a guide; without one it is a field of shapes.

Hawa Mahal

Five storeys, 953 windows, barely a metre deep — a screen built in 1799 so the women of the court could watch the street unseen.
