Eight hours covers Jaipur's main circuit properly, with a guide who is with you at each site rather than a driver who drops you at the gate.

Amer Fort

Begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, above Maota Lake. The Sheesh Mahal mirror palace — thousands of convex tiles set into wall and ceiling so a single candle flame multiplies across the whole room. The painted Ganesh Pol gateway into the private palaces. And the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running through channels cut in the marble, which is sixteenth-century air conditioning on a hilltop.

City Palace

Still partly lived in by the royal family. The Mubarak Mahal textile and costume collection, the Diwan-i-Khas with the two largest single pieces of silver ever made, and Pritam Niwas Chowk with its four painted doorways for the four seasons.

Jantar Mantar

The 1730s observatory. Nineteen instruments, all working, including a 27-metre sundial accurate to two seconds.

Hawa Mahal

The 953-window facade built in 1799 so the women of the household could watch street processions unseen.
