Five shapes of the same city

The choice worth noticing here is the night tour, which almost nobody offers and which is the best option in May and June when the daytime is punishing.

The night version

Jaipur after dark is genuinely good. Hawa Mahal and the City Palace walls are floodlit, the bazaars run until ten, Nahargarh on the ridge gives you the whole lit grid of the walled city below, and the Albert Hall Museum is lit and surrounded by pigeons in numbers that have to be seen.

No monument interiors, because they close — this is a tour of the city rather than of its rooms.

The day versions

Amber Fort, the hilltop complex above Maota Lake begun in 1592: the Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal where mirror fragments turned a single candle into a ceiling of stars, and the Sukh Niwas cooled by water channels in the walls.
