Jaipur's walled city was laid out on a grid in 1727, which is unusual for India, but the bazaar lanes running off it are narrow and permanently busy. A tuk-tuk gets down them and parks anywhere. A car is air-conditioned, which between April and September is not a small thing.

This tour lets you pick, and the guide is the same either way.

What you see

Amer Fort above Maota Lake — the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber, the painted Ganesh Pol, and the water-cooled Sukh Niwas.

City Palace, where the royal family still lives in part of it, with the two vast silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas.

Jantar Mantar, nineteen working stone instruments including a 27-metre sundial accurate to two seconds.

Hawa Mahal, the 953-window facade — and going inside, which most visitors skip, for the view out through them.

On the eight-hour tuk-tuk option there is also time for Panna Meena ka Kund, the symmetrical stepwell below Amer, and the old city lanes where the block printers and lac bangle makers work.
