Half day or full day, and the honest difference

Half a day covers the old city — City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal — or Amber Fort and the road out to it. Not both.

A full day covers both, with time at each rather than a walk-through, and room for the bazaars at the end.

If Jaipur is your only Rajasthan stop, take the full day.

Amber Fort

In the Aravalli hills above Maota Lake, begun 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general — which is why a Rajput fort has Mughal inlay work in it.

The Ganesh Pol gateway is the one on the postcards. The Sheesh Mahal behind it is the reason to go inside: convex mirror fragments set across the ceiling so a single candle read as a sky of stars. The Sukh Niwas was cooled by water running in channels through the marble.

Panna Meena ka Kund

Nearby, and usually included: a 16th-century stepwell with criss-crossing staircases descending eight storeys, quiet because the coaches skip it.

Jal Mahal

From the causeway. Four of five storeys underwater, no entry.

City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal

The old-city cluster. The palace is still partly the royal residence; the observatory's 27-metre sundial reads to about two seconds; and the Hawa Mahal's 953 windows were built as a screen for the zenana.
