What decides whether a Jaipur day works is not which sites you choose but when you reach them. Amer before the coaches, the walled city in the middle when it is shaded, the ridge at the end. A driver and guide who know that is most of what this buys.

What you see

Amer Fort, begun 1592 above Maota Lake — a fort outside and a palace within. The Sheesh Mahal, where thousands of convex mirror tiles set into wall and ceiling multiply a single flame across the whole room. The painted Ganesh Pol gateway, its frescoes still holding colour after four centuries. And the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels cut through the marble, which is a genuine engineering feat on a hilltop in the sixteenth century.

City Palace, still partly the royal residence. The Diwan-i-Khas holds two sterling silver urns that remain the largest single silver objects ever made — built so Sawai Madho Singh II could carry Ganges water to England in 1901 rather than drink anything else.

Jantar Mantar, the 1730s observatory, with nineteen working stone instruments including a 27-metre sundial accurate to two seconds.
