Private, and you pick the vehicle

Eight hours of Jaipur with a driver who is yours for the day — stop where you want, stay as long as you want, skip what does not interest you.

Tuk-tuk or car

A tuk-tuk is open, cheap and the more characterful ride. It fits down lanes no car can enter, which matters in the old city, and in winter it is simply the nicer way to move.

A car is air-conditioned and is the sensible choice from April onward, when the afternoon heat in Jaipur stops being atmospheric.

Amber Fort

Eleven kilometres north on a ridge above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh.

The Ganesh Pol painted gateway, the Sheesh Mahal with its ceiling of mirror fragments, and the Sukh Niwas, where water ran through channels in the walls to cool the room.

Go first thing. The difference between nine and eleven in the morning here is enormous.

Hawa Mahal

Five storeys, 953 windows, and barely a metre deep — a screen built in 1799 so the women of the court could watch the street without being seen from it.

City Palace

Mughal and Rajput architecture across a sequence of courtyards, part of it still the residence of the former royal family.

Jantar Mantar

The 18th-century observatory of nineteen stone instruments, UNESCO-listed, where the great sundial keeps time to within a couple of seconds.

The markets

This is the part a private day gives you that a fixed tour does not. Johari Bazaar for gems and gold, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and mojari slippers, Tripolia for lac bangles made over a flame while you watch.

Practical

Eight hours with hotel pickup and drop-off.

Entrance fees are separate — roughly ₹1,500 a head for a foreign adult if you enter all the main sites.
