The best ninety minutes in Jaipur after dark

An open jeep, a hill road out of the city, and a viewpoint on the Aravalli ridge as the sun goes down over the Pink City. Then down to Amber Fort for the sound and light show. It is short, it is cheap, and it does the two things most day tours have no time left for.

The sunset

Jaipur sits in a bowl with hills on three sides, which is what makes the ridge viewpoints work — the whole grid of the walled city lies out below, and as the light drops the sandstone goes from pink to deep orange while the streetlights come up beneath you.

An open jeep on the way up is a better ride than a car, and noticeably cooler in the hour after sunset.

The Amber Fort show

The sound and light show is projected onto the fort and the ridge below it from across Maota Lake, with the whole structure lit in sequence as the narration moves through the Kachwaha dynasty — Man Singh, the Mughal alliances, the building of the palaces above.

There is an English performance and a Hindi one at different times each evening; the English one is usually the later slot. The reflection of the lit fort in the lake is the image people take away.
