Amer Fort

The hilltop complex north of the city, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh and extended over 150 years. Hindu and Mughal architecture in the same building — Rajput courtyards and chhatris with Persian gardens and inlay work.

The Ganesh Pol gateway, painted and gilded. The Sheesh Mahal, set with thousands of convex mirror fragments so a single flame would light the room. The Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels running through the marble walls. And the zenana, with twelve queens' apartments around one courtyard and corridors arranged so none of them would know which was being visited.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop on the causeway over Man Sagar Lake. Four of its five storeys are underwater, and nobody goes in.

City Palace

Still partly lived in by the former royal family. Courtyards, the armoury, the textile galleries, and the two enormous silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas, cast so a maharaja could carry Ganges water with him on a voyage to England.

Jantar Mantar

Jai Singh II built cities and studied the stars, and this is where the two meet: nineteen masonry instruments, UNESCO-listed, with a 27-metre sundial that still reads local time to within a couple of seconds. Your guide can show you how.

Hawa Mahal

The 953-window facade on Sireh Deori Bazaar — five storeys, barely a metre deep in places, built as a screen rather than a palace. Morning light is when it goes properly pink.
