Full description

Sariska, and the reason it is interesting

Sariska lost every one of its tigers to poaching by 2004 — the whole population, confirmed by census. It became the first reserve in the world to have tigers reintroduced by air, flown in from Ranthambore from 2008 onward. The population now breeds on its own.

That history makes a safari here a different experience from one at a park that never emptied. You are looking at an ecosystem that was put back.

The drive

About three hours from Jaipur through rural Rajasthan — millet fields, Aravalli ridges, and villages where the road is the main street.

The safari

A private jeep inside the reserve, which covers 880 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest, rocky hill and grassland, with lakes that concentrate the wildlife as the dry season deepens.

Tigers are the headline and they are not guaranteed — Sariska's are fewer and its terrain is more wooded than Ranthambore's, so sightings are harder won. What you will reliably see is sambar, chital, nilgai, langur, wild boar, and often leopard tracks. The birdlife is excellent: peafowl everywhere, crested serpent eagles, sandgrouse at the water.

Inside the reserve are also the ruins of Kankwari Fort, where Aurangzeb is said to have imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh, and the 10th-century Neelkanth temples.

The night

A jungle resort near the gate, dinner, and a quiet evening. Being there overnight is what makes a second safari at dawn possible, which is when the odds of a tiger are best.

Practical

Safari zones and permits are allocated by the forest department; you do not choose your zone and neither do we.

Sariska closes to safaris from 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon. October to March is the comfortable season; April to June is hot and has the best water-hole sightings.

Mornings in December and January are genuinely cold in an open jeep. Carry a jacket, wear muted colours, and leave the perfume.
