Two vehicles, two tempers of day

Same route, and the choice of vehicle changes it more than you would expect.

A tuk-tuk is open on both sides, fits the old-city lanes, and from October to March is the more enjoyable way to travel. You get the flower market by smell and the street by sound.

An air-conditioned car is the right call from April to June, when the middle of the day in Jaipur is genuinely hard going, and on any full-day version where you are out for eight hours.

Amber Fort and Palace

The centrepiece: a hilltop complex of red sandstone and white marble begun in 1592, where Rajput and Mughal architecture sit in the same courtyards.

The Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal where mirror fragments turn one flame into a ceiling of stars, and the Sukh Niwas cooled by water channels cut through its walls. Below, Maota Lake and the saffron-bed garden laid out in the middle of it.

Jal Mahal
