Jaipur: Stepwell, Amber Fort & Old City Markets Tour + Lunch

Stepwell first, fort second, markets last

The order matters. Panna Meena is empty at eight in the morning and busy by eleven; Amber is the reverse of pleasant after midday; and the bazaars only really come alive in the afternoon. This day is arranged around that rather than around a map.

Panna Meena ka Kund

A 16th-century stepwell below Amber, with criss-crossing symmetrical staircases descending eight storeys to a square of water. It was cut so the village could reach water in any season, and the temperature at the bottom runs several degrees below the surface — which was the point as much as the water was.

It photographs like an optical illusion and it is almost always quiet, because the coaches do not stop. You cannot descend to the water, and you should not try.

Amber Fort

The hilltop complex above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh. Courtyards climbing the ridge, the painted Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal where thousands of convex mirror fragments turned one candle into a ceiling of stars, and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running in channels cut through the marble.

The old-city markets

The part most tours run out of time for.

Jai Singh II laid Jaipur out in 1727 on a nine-square grid with each trade allocated its own block, and the bazaars still follow it: Johari for gemstones and kundan jewellery, Tripolia and Maniharon ka Rasta for lac bangles made over a flame in front of you, Bapu Bazaar for block-printed cloth and mojari slippers.
