Jaipur's walled city was laid out in 1727 on a grid, which is unusual for an Indian old city, but the bazaar lanes running off it are narrow and permanently jammed. A tuk-tuk goes where a car has to stop, and that is most of what this tour buys you.

Where you go

Johari Bazaar for jewellery and gemstones — Jaipur cuts a very large share of the world's coloured stones. Bapu Bazaar for textiles, juttis and perfume. Tripolia Bazaar for lac bangles, made over an open flame in shops the width of a doorway. And the lanes behind them, where the block printers and silversmiths actually work.

What you eat

Jaipur's street food is its own thing. Pyaaz kachori, a flaky pastry stuffed with spiced onion, eaten hot and greasy. Mirchi bada, a whole chilli in gram-flour batter, less violent than it sounds. Ghewar, the disc-shaped honeycomb sweet soaked in syrup, made properly only here. Lassi in a clay cup you throw away after. And chai from a pot that has been going since morning.
