Jaipur to Agra is about 240 km and most people do it as a transfer day: five hours in a car, nothing to show for it. Ranthambore sits roughly between the two, so with one night you convert that dead day into a tiger safari and still arrive in Agra.

Ranthambore is one of India's better-known tiger reserves, built around a tenth-century fort with the forest grown up around it. It holds a genuine tiger population, and unlike some parks the animals here are habituated to vehicles, which is why the sighting rate is what it is. You also get leopard, sloth bear, sambar, crocodile and a very large number of birds.

Worth knowing

Ranthambore closes from 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon. Zones 6 to 10 sometimes stay open; the core zones do not.
Safari slots are limited and government-allocated. They sell out well ahead in season, particularly October to March and around Indian holidays. Book as early as you can.
A tiger sighting is not guaranteed and nobody honest will promise one. Sighting rates are good and vary by zone, and the zone is allotted by the forest department, not chosen.
Morning safaris are colder and generally better for sightings. Dawn in December is properly cold in an open vehicle; bring layers.
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so plan your Agra arrival accordingly.
