Jaipur before nine in the morning

The city is a different place at seven. The flower market is banked with marigold for the day's temple offerings, milk is being delivered in steel cans, chai is being poured from height, and the old-city lanes are empty enough to hear.

An open tuk-tuk is the right vehicle for that hour, and a driver who lives here is the right guide for it.

What the morning covers

The flower mandi first, which is finished by eight and so is missed by every standard tour.

The great crossroads of Jai Singh's 1727 grid — Chhoti Chopad and Badi Chopad — and Jalebi Chowk, where the frying starts early.

Temples as the morning aartis run: bells, drums and people on their way to work stopping in for two minutes.

The bazaar lanes as the shutters go up: bangle makers heating lac over a flame, block printers laying cloth, vegetable carts being loaded.

And the monuments from outside as the light comes onto them — Hawa Mahal goes properly pink for about an hour after sunrise, which is the only time it looks the way the photographs promise.

This is a driver-led tour rather than a licensed-guide one, and that is the point: you are getting somebody's own city rather than a script. Ask them where they eat.

By tuk-tuk with an English-speaking driver, which is the version this tour is built around.

Or by air-conditioned car with a guide, which is the sensible choice from April to June when even the mornings are hot.

Around seven hours, with hotel pickup. Early start — the whole tour depends on it.

No monument entry fees are included; this route is about the streets rather than the interiors, and your driver will tell you which tickets are worth buying on another day.
