The walled city on foot

Jai Singh II laid Jaipur out in 1727 on a nine-square grid taken from Hindu architectural treatises — the first planned city in India, with streets of standard widths and trades allocated to specific blocks. That plan is still legible if someone walks you through it, and invisible if nobody does.

Three hours, entirely inside the old city, on foot.

Jantar Mantar

Jai Singh was an astronomer who built cities on the side. His observatory holds nineteen masonry instruments, UNESCO-listed, including the Samrat Yantra — a 27-metre sundial still accurate to about two seconds, and readable if someone shows you how.

City Palace

Mughal and Rajput architecture around a series of courtyards, part of it still the residence of the former royal family. From outside, the Chandra Mahal is the seven-storey block at the centre; the flag flying from it means the family is in.

Hawa Mahal

The honeycomb facade of 953 windows, built in 1799 as an extension of the zenana so that royal women could watch street processions without being seen. Barely a metre deep in places — it is a screen rather than a palace.

Govind Dev Ji

Jaipur's most loved temple, in the palace gardens. The image of Krishna was carried here from Vrindavan to keep it from Aurangzeb, and seven aartis are sung daily to a full hall. The maharaja placed his own apartments so he could see the deity from his window.

The bazaars

The old markets between the sites — flower sellers, bangle lanes, spice shops, and the trades still sitting where the 1727 plan put them.

The 250-year-old camera

A working wooden box camera, hand-developed, with a Rajasthani turban to wear for the portrait. It is a gimmick and it is also a genuinely old piece of equipment, and the print comes out in about five minutes.
