A shopping day, guided by a woman who shops here

Jaipur's markets reward local knowledge more than almost any city in India, and they can be uncomfortable to navigate alone — crowded lanes, persistent shop touts, and a price that moves depending on who is asking.

This is five hours with a female guide who knows the bazaars as a resident rather than as a tour operator, which changes both the experience and the numbers.

Where you go

Johari Bazaar for jewellery — kundan, where stones are set in pure gold foil without claws so they seem to float, and meenakari, the enamel fired onto the back of the same piece so it carries a hidden second design. Both are Jaipur specialities.

Bapu Bazaar for textiles and footwear — bandhani and leheriya tie-dye, block-printed cotton, quilted razais, and mojari slippers with the curled toes.

Tripolia and Maniharon ka Rasta for lac bangles, still made over a flame in front of you.

Plus artisan workshops where you can watch the work being done rather than only buy the result.

What your guide is actually for

Telling handwork from machine work, which is most of what is sold as handwork. Knowing what a thing costs before you ask. Handling the negotiation if you would rather not, or teaching you to, if you would.

And steering you away from the shops that pay commission — say at the start that you want to be taken where locals buy, and it will be.

Practical

Two options: guide only, or guide with a car. The car is worth it if you intend to buy anything bulky, and in the heat.

Around five hours. Carry cash — many of the smaller workshops do not take cards, and UPI will not work on a foreign phone.
