A transfer that takes in a World Heritage wetland

Jaipur to Agra with two of the best stops in north India on the way. If you are moving between the cities anyway, this is the same journey with a day's sightseeing built into it.

Chand Baori, Abhaneri

Two hours out of Jaipur. 3,500 steps in perfect double flights dropping thirteen storeys to a square of green water, cut in the 9th century so a village could reach water through a desert summer.

The base runs five or six degrees cooler than the surface, which was as much the point as the water. It photographs like an optical illusion and it is nearly always quiet.

Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most important wetlands in Asia — and an entirely artificial one. The Maharaja of Bharatpur built it in the 1850s as a duck-shooting reserve, flooding a natural depression; the shooting records from the 1930s are horrifying and the habitat they created is now protected.

Over 370 bird species have been recorded here. In winter the resident population is joined by migrants from Central Asia, Siberia and Tibet: bar-headed geese, common cranes, several thousand ducks, and the painted storks that nest in the acacias in enormous noisy colonies.

The Siberian crane wintered here until 2002 and has not returned, which is its own story.

You move through the park by cycle rickshaw — the drivers are licensed and many are excellent naturalists — or on foot or by bicycle. No motor vehicles inside, which is why it is so quiet.
