Why skip-the-line matters at exactly one place

Amber Fort. It takes several thousand visitors a day in season and the ticket counter at the base can cost you half an hour before you start the climb. The other monuments rarely queue.

Amber Fort

Begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh on a ridge above Maota Lake, in the pale sandstone of the Aravallis.

The painted Ganesh Pol gateway, with a screened gallery above from which the women of the court watched arrivals unseen. The Sheesh Mahal, where thousands of convex mirror fragments set into the ceiling turned a single candle into a sky of stars. The Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running through channels cut in the marble.

The zenana courtyard held twelve queens' apartments, laid out so that none overlooked another.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop from the causeway. Four of its five storeys sit underwater; there is no boat and no entry.

City Palace

Still partly the residence of the former royal family, with the armoury, the textile galleries and the two silver urns cast to carry Ganges water to England.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments, UNESCO-listed, with a 27-metre sundial still accurate to about two seconds — and worth a guide, because without one it is a field of shapes.
