Jaipur without moving hotels

Plenty of people base themselves in Pushkar for the lake and the quiet and then want a day of the Pink City without packing up. It is 145 km, about three hours each way on decent road, which makes a day trip entirely reasonable — you leave after an early breakfast and you are back for dinner.

The car is private and air-conditioned and stays with you all day. A licensed English-speaking guide joins you in Jaipur.

What the day covers

Amber Fort, the hilltop complex begun in 1592 above Maota Lake. Sandstone and marble, the Ganesh Pol gateway, and the Sheesh Mahal, whose mirrored ceiling was designed to turn one candle into a sky of light.

City Palace, where Rajput, Mughal and European architecture meet across a sequence of courtyards, part of it still lived in by the former royal family.

Hawa Mahal, the five-storey lattice on Sireh Deori Bazaar — 953 windows, and less than a metre deep for most of its height.

If there is appetite left, the bazaars around Johari and Tripolia are the real working city: gem cutters, block printers, bangle makers.
