teamLab in Tokyo: Two Museums, and Which One to Book

This is the mistake people make, and it usually costs a booking. teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets are separate museums, in different parts of Tokyo, with separate tickets.

Borderless sits in Azabudai Hills in central Tokyo. Its concept is that the artworks are not confined to rooms — they wander between spaces, cross walls, and interact with each other, so there is no set route and no map. You are meant to get lost in it.

Planets is out at Toyosu, near the fish market. You go barefoot, and several rooms involve walking through water up to your knees. It is more of a sequence — four main exhibition spaces you pass through in order — and physically a more unusual experience than Borderless.

Most people who have time for one pick Borderless for scale and Planets for novelty. Doing both in a day is possible but they are on opposite sides of the city centre.

Both venues run timed entry and both regularly sell out, especially at weekends and through holiday periods. Tickets are typically released around two months ahead and are limited per slot.

Book online before you fly, not when you arrive. Same-day tickets exist in theory and are usually gone in practice.

On slot choice: these are dark, mirrored, heavily photographed spaces, and the crowd density inside changes the experience more than at a conventional museum. Earlier slots on weekdays are noticeably calmer than evening or weekend ones.

Practical notes: at Planets, wear or bring shorts — you will be rolling trousers up, and lockers and rinse facilities are provided. Skirts and dresses are a problem in a building full of mirrored floors, which the venue itself warns about. At both, phone in hand is standard, but the works are better looked at than photographed.

Honest answer: it is one of the few things in Tokyo that is genuinely unlike anything you can see elsewhere, and it is also the most photographed and most hyped attraction in the city.

What it does well is scale and immersion — rooms where projected flowers bloom and die on your body as you stand still, a hall of hanging lights that respond to movement, a water room where projected koi turn into flowers when they touch you. There is real technical craft in it.

What it is not is a museum with information, context or anything to read. You walk through effects. Some people find ninety minutes plenty and others stay three hours.

If your trip is short and you are choosing between teamLab and, say, an early morning at Senso-ji or a day trip to Nikko, it is worth being clear-eyed: teamLab is spectacular and it is not Japan-specific in any deep sense. Book it because you want to see the art, not because it tops a list.

Borderless is at Azabudai Hills, walkable from Kamiyacho or Roppongi-itchome stations on the Hibiya and Namboku lines. It is central, so it slots into a normal Tokyo day — Roppongi, Tokyo Tower and Azabudai are all in the same pocket.

Planets is at Shin-Toyosu on the Yurikamome driverless line, or Toyosu on the Yurakucho line. It pairs naturally with Toyosu fish market in the morning, since they are minutes apart — auction at dawn, breakfast, then Planets when it opens.

Allow a good two hours inside either, plus queueing at entry even with a timed ticket.
