Samurai and Ninja Experiences in Tokyo: Sword Classes, Shuriken, and What Is Actually Historical

Tokyo sells three products as samurai experiences and they are not the same. The first is a martial-arts class: iaido (drawing and cutting with a katana) or kenjutsu, taught by a practitioner, usually with a wooden or blunt sword and a real one only for a supervised tameshigiri cut through a rolled tatami mat. The second is a performance with participation, where actors in armour stage a fight and you learn a short choreography. The third is a costume session: armour or a kimono, a sword for the photos, thirty minutes. All three are enjoyable; the mistake is booking one expecting another. Read the itinerary for the words 'training', 'show' and 'photo' and you will know which you have.

Ninja experiences run mostly in Asakusa and around Akihabara, with shuriken throwing, a blowpipe, a short stealth-walking drill and a costume. They are built for families: children from about six can take part, the props are foam or rubber, and the sessions run in English. The samurai-ninja museum in Asakusa combines a small collection of real armour and blades with a shuriken range, which makes it the best single stop if you have one afternoon and mixed ages. Samurai were the warrior class from roughly the 12th century until the class was abolished in the 1870s; Edo (Tokyo) was their capital from 1603. Ninja were covert agents mostly from the Iga and Koga regions, and almost everything about black costumes comes from later theatre. Good instructors say this plainly. Two places in Tokyo tie the theme to real history: the sword collection at the Japanese Sword Museum in Ryogoku, and the Sengaku-ji temple graves of the 47 ronin, whose 1702 revenge is the most famous samurai story in Japan and is a ten-minute walk from Sengakuji station.

With children under ten: a ninja session, 60 minutes, Asakusa. Teenagers and adults who want to sweat: an iaido or kenjutsu class, 90 minutes, and expect stance and etiquette drills before any cutting. For a photo and a story: the costume session, book it in the morning when studios are quiet. A tameshigiri cut with live steel is offered to adults only and the instructor decides who is ready. Wear trousers you can kneel in; everything else is provided.

Asakusa sessions sit next to Senso-ji and the Sumida riverside, so an early temple visit, the class, then lunch on Kappabashi works well. Shinjuku sessions pair with the sumo morning practice on the days it runs, since both are physical and both finish by early afternoon. Budget USD 40 to 60 for a ninja or costume session and USD 90 to 150 for a taught sword class with a cut.
