Agra hat drei Welterbe-Einträge, und die meisten Besucher sehen einen. Dieser Tag deckt alle drei ab, was funktioniert, weil sie auf einer Linie liegen: Taj und Fort sind in der Stadt wenige Minuten voneinander entfernt, und Fatehpur Sikri liegt 40 km westlich an der Ausfallstraße.
Was Sie sehen
Der Taj Mahal braucht keine Begründung. Ihr Guide bringt Sie durch das Tor und führt Sie durch die Gärten, über die Plattform und ins Innere des Mausoleums und erklärt die Pietra-dura-Einlegearbeit und wie die Kalligrafie so bemessen ist, dass sie vom Boden aus gleichmäßig wirkt.
Das Agra Fort wird unterschätzt. Es ist eher eine funktionierende Festung als ein Denkmal, aus rotem Sandstein statt Marmor, und hier verbrachte Shah Jahan seine letzten acht Jahre, von seinem Sohn Aurangzeb festgesetzt, mit Blick über die Yamuna auf das Grab, das er für seine Frau hatte bauen lassen.
Fatehpur Sikri ist die ruhigste und die seltsamste Stätte. Akbar errichtete hier in den 1570er-Jahren eine ganze Hauptstadt und gab sie binnen fünfzehn Jahren wieder auf, höchstwahrscheinlich wegen des Wassers. Das Tor Buland Darwaza, der Panch Mahal und das Marmorgrab von Salim Chishti stehen noch, weitgehend leer.
