Delhi nach Agra mit dem Expresszug dauert deutlich unter zwei Stunden gegenüber drei auf der Straße, und er ist immun gegen die eine Größe, die sich nicht planen lässt: aus Delhi herauszukommen. Über einen Tagesausflug gerechnet macht dieser Unterschied aus zwei Stätten drei.

Den Taj Mahal, mit Zeit, ihn richtig zu erleben, und nicht als Fotostopp.
Das Agra Fort, außen roter Sandstein und innen Marmor, wo der Musamman Burj über die Yamuna hinweg auf das Grabmal blickt, das Shah Jahan errichtete und in dessen Sichtweite er später eingeschlossen wurde.
Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km westlich. Akbar baute diese Hauptstadt ab 1571 aus rotem Sandstein und gab sie binnen etwa fünfzehn Jahren auf, sehr wahrscheinlich weil das Wasser ausblieb. Weil nichts darüber gebaut wurde, steht dort eine vollständige Kaiserstadt: das 54 Meter hohe Buland Darwaza, die fünf offenen Geschosse des Panch Mahal und die Marmor-Dargah von Salim Chishti, an deren durchbrochene Schirme Frauen noch heute Fäden knoten.
