Das Goldene Dreieck, plus die älteste Stadt

Delhi, Agra und Jaipur sind mogulisches und Rajputen-Indien, Festungen, Grabmäler, Paläste, drei oder vier Jahrhunderte alt. Varanasi ist etwas ganz anderes, und es ans Ende dieser Route zu setzen, ist das, was die Reise sechs statt drei Tage wert macht.

Delhi

Zuerst Alt-Delhi: die Jama Masjid, die Rikschafahrt durch Chandni Chowk, und das Rote Fort von 1638. Dann Neu-Delhi, India Gate, Qutub Minar, Humayuns Grabmal, das Gartengrab aus den 1560er-Jahren, nach dessen Vorbild der Taj entstand, und der Lotus-Tempel.

Agra

Der Taj Mahal, idealerweise bei Sonnenaufgang, und das Agra Fort, wo Shah Jahan seine letzten acht Jahre als Gefangener seines Sohnes verbrachte und flussabwärts auf das Grabmal blickte, das er gebaut hatte. Fatehpur Sikri fällt meist auf die Fahrt nach Jaipur, Akbars vollständige Hauptstadt, 1571 gebaut und aufgegeben, als das Wasser ausblieb.

Jaipur

Varanasi

Eine Bootsfahrt bei Morgengrauen entlang der Ghats ist das, was man tun sollte, die ganze Uferfront wendet sich dem Sonnenaufgang zu, und Tausende baden gleichzeitig im Fluss. Abends die Ganga Aarti in Dashashwamedh: Feuer, Glocken und Priester, die sich im Gleichtakt bewegen.

Sarnath liegt elf Kilometer entfernt, dort hielt Buddha seine erste Predigt.
