Keine Forts Rajasthans und kein Taj auf dieser Route. Sie führt stattdessen nach Osten in Uttar Pradesh: die älteste durchgehend bewohnte Stadt Indiens, die umstrittenste Tempelstadt des Landes, und die letzte große höfische Stadt der Mogul-Nachfolgestaaten.

Varanasi

Flug ab Delhi. Die Stadt beansprucht dreitausend Jahre ununterbrochener Besiedlung und sieht auch so aus.

Eine Bootsfahrt bei Morgendämmerung entlang der Ghats ist das zentrale Erlebnis, die gesamte Flussfront wendet sich dem Sonnenaufgang zu, während Tausende auf den Stufen baden, waschen und beten. Abends die Ganga Aarti bei Dashashwamedh, mit gestuften Lampen und Glocken, von Priestern in Einheit dargeboten.

Die Verbrennungsghats bei Manikarnika und Harishchandra brennen ununterbrochen, denn Hindus glauben, dass der Tod hier den Kreislauf der Wiedergeburt beendet. Dort keine Fotografie, das ist absolut.

Sarnath, elf Kilometer entfernt, ist der Ort, an dem Buddha nach seiner Erleuchtung seine erste Predigt hielt. Der Dhamek-Stupa und das Museum mit dem Löwenkapitell des Ashoka, dem Original des indischen Staatsemblems, befinden sich beide hier.

Ayodhya

Von Hindus als Geburtsort von Rama angesehen. Der Ram Mandir, im Januar 2024 an der am meisten umstrittenen Stätte der modernen indischen Geschichte eingeweiht, zählt heute zu den meistbesuchten Orten des Landes.

Ebenfalls hier: Hanuman Garhi, über sechsundsiebzig Stufen und belebter als jeder andere Ort in der Stadt, und die Ghats entlang des Flusses Sarayu, wo die abendliche Aarti kleiner und ruhiger ist als die von Varanasi.

Lucknow

Die Hauptstadt von Awadh, und ein völlig anderer Charakter: höfisch, ohne Eile, und berühmt für seine Umgangsformen.

Das Bara Imambara mit seinem Bhul Bhulaiya, einem Labyrinth aus 489 identischen Türen in den Mauern über dem Saal, man braucht wirklich den Führer. Das Chota Imambara, das Rumi Darwaza, und die zerstörte Residency, noch immer von der Belagerung von 1857 vernarbt.

Und das Essen: Galouti-Kebab, erfunden für einen zahnlosen Nawab, und Awadhi-Biryani.
