Ein halber Tag in Lutyens' Delhi.

Das ist die kurze Tour durch das Viertel der Hauptstadt aus dem 20. Jahrhundert, den Teil, der gebaut wurde, als die Briten 1911 ihre Hauptstadt von Kalkutta verlegten und eine neue Stadt aus breiten Alleen und Sandstein anlegten.

Die Sacred Heart Cathedral wurde 1934 im italienischen Renaissancestil vollendet, ganz in Weiß und Blau mit einem tonnengewölbten Kirchenschiff. Sie ist eine genutzte Kathedrale, mittags still, und fast keine Touristen gehen hin. Das ist zu einem großen Teil ihr Reiz.

Das India Gate ist der 42 Meter hohe Bogen am Ende der Rajpath, errichtet als Kriegsdenkmal für die 84.000 indischen Soldaten, die im Ersten Weltkrieg und im Dritten Anglo-Afghanischen Krieg fielen. Etwa 13.300 Namen sind eingemeißelt. Die Rasenflächen ringsum sind der Ort, an den Delhi am Abend kommt, mit Familien, Eisverkäufern und einer Stimmung, die mit Besichtigung nichts zu tun hat.
