Indiens ältester Nationalpark

Corbett wurde 1936 als Hailey-Nationalpark gegründet, der erste des Landes, und hier begann 1973 das Projekt Tiger. Er umfasst 1.300 Quadratkilometer Sal-Wald, Grasland und Flussbett in den Ausläufern des Himalaya und beherbergt eine der dichtesten Tigerpopulationen Indiens.

Er liegt etwa sechs Stunden von Delhi entfernt, weshalb zwei Tage die richtige Länge sind.

Die Fahrt

Frühe Abholung in Delhi, dann nach Norden über Moradabad nach Ramnagar, der Stadt am Parktor. Check-in, Mittagessen, und direkt hinaus zur Nachmittagssafari.

Die Safaris

Zwei Jeep-Safaris, eine am Nachmittag, eine bei Morgendämmerung am folgenden Tag, mit einem Führer der Forstbehörde im Fahrzeug, der vorgeschrieben ist und auch der Grund, warum man Dinge sieht, an denen man sonst vorbeifahren würde.

Tiger sind die Attraktion, und Corbetts Tiger sind wirklich wild statt gewöhnt, daher sind Sichtungen Glückssache. Was man zuverlässig sieht: asiatische Elefanten, oft in Herden; Sambarhirsche, Axishirsche und Schweinshirsche; Hanuman-Languren; Wildschweine; und Gaviale und Mugger-Krokodile am Flussbett des Ramganga.

Die Vogelbeobachtung ist außergewöhnlich, über 600 erfasste Arten, darunter der Riesenhornvogel, der Schlangenadler, und im Winter der Ibisschnabel auf den Flusskieseln.

Dhikala ist die berühmte Zone, tief im Inneren am Ramganga-Stausee; Bijrani und Jhirna sind die üblicheren Tageszonen. Welche man bekommt, entscheidet die Forstbehörde, nicht wir.

Die meisten Zonen schließen von Mitte Juni bis Mitte November wegen des Monsuns; Jhirna und Dhela bleiben ganzjährig geöffnet. November bis Februar ist kalt und klar; März bis Juni ist heiß und bietet die besten Sichtungen am Wasser.
