Neunzig Minuten, und ein Tempel mit besonderer Geschichte

Der Lakshminarayan-Tempel, jeder nennt ihn Birla Mandir, wurde von der Industriellenfamilie Birla zwischen 1933 und 1939 erbaut, und er wurde von Mahatma Gandhi unter einer Bedingung eingeweiht: dass Menschen jeder Kaste zugelassen würden.

1939 war das keine Kleinigkeit. Der Tempelzutritt für Dalits war einer der zentralen Kämpfe dieser Zeit, und Gandhis Bedingung machte dieses Gebäude zu einer Aussage statt nur zu einer Spende.

Das ist der Grund, hier anderthalb Stunden zu verbringen, statt es nur von der Straße aus zu fotografieren.

Der Tempel

Lakshminarayan gewidmet, Vishnu mit seiner Gemahlin Lakshmi. Drei Stockwerke cremefarbener und rotockerfarbener Sandstein im Nagara-Stil, mit hohen gebogenen Shikharas und einer großen Menge Schnitzwerk, errichtet auf 6,27 Acres.

Nebenschreine ehren Shiva, Durga, Krishna, Hanuman, Ganesha und die Shiv Parivar.

Der Sheesh Mahal und Geeta Bhawan dienen Vorträgen statt der Verehrung, und die Gärten dahinter beherbergen Brunnen und geschnitzte Szenen, darunter eine recht erstaunliche Sammlung zur hinduistischen Mythologie, die Kinder mögen.

Der Architekt war Sris Chandra Chatterjee, der in einem bewusst revivalistischen indischen Stil arbeitete, zu einer Zeit, als die meisten öffentlichen Bauten in Delhi von den Briten in einem völlig anderen Stil errichtet wurden.

Was erwartet wird

Schuhe aus am Schalter, der kostenlos und besetzt ist. Schultern und Knie bedeckt. Fotografieren im Inneren der Schreine ist verboten, und Lederartikel, Gürtel, Taschen, Geldbörsen mit Lederbesatz, sollten im Auto bleiben.

Es ist ein aktiver Tempel, daher wird Aarti stattfinden. Man kann hinten so lange sitzen, wie man möchte.
