Es sind 240 km pro Richtung und der Tag dauert rund elf Stunden. Das ist so, und Sie sollten in dem Wissen buchen, dass fünf dieser Stunden im Auto vergehen. Was Sie dafür bekommen, ist der Ganges dort, wo er aus dem Himalaya tritt, klar, kalt und grün, und das hat mit dem Fluss in Varanasi nichts zu tun.

Laxman Jhula und Ram Jhula

Zwei Hängebrücken über den Fluss, ein paar Kilometer voneinander entfernt, und der Schwerpunkt der ganzen Stadt. Sie gehen zu Fuß hinüber, mit Pilgern, Motorrädern, Kühen und Affen: tragen Sie in der Nähe der Affen kein Essen in der Hand, sie sind organisiert.

Am Ostufer staffeln sich die Tempel in Stufen, und der Blick zurück über das Wasser von der Brückenmitte ist das Foto, das alle machen.

Parmarth Niketan

Der größte Ashram in Rishikesh, über tausend Zimmer, mit dem Ghat, an dem jeden Abend zum Sonnenuntergang die Ganga Aarti stattfindet: Lampen, Gesang, und der Fluss, der die Flamme davonträgt. Wenn Ihr Tag lang genug läuft, bleiben Sie dafür.

Die Stadt

Rishikesh ist seit Jahrhunderten ein Ort der Meditation und seit die Beatles 1968 zum Ashram von Maharishi Mahesh Yogi kamen eine Stadt der Yogaschulen. Dieser Ashram ist heute verlassen und mit Wandbildern bedeckt, und man kann ihn gegen eine kleine Gebühr durchgehen.
