Varanasi und zurück zwischen zwei Nächten

Delhi nach Varanasi sind 800 km. Auf der Straße ist das ein Tag pro Richtung; per Flug sind es neunzig Minuten, die einzige Möglichkeit, dies an einem einzigen Tag zu schaffen. Früher Hinflug, abendlicher Rückflug, und ein voller Tag am Boden mit Auto und Führer.

Es ist ein langer Tag, der sehr viel abdeckt. Wenn Sie eine Nacht erübrigen können, bleiben Sie, aber dies existiert, weil die meisten Menschen auf einer zweiwöchigen Indienreise das nicht können.

Sarnath

Erster Halt, zehn Kilometer von der Flughafenseite der Stadt entfernt. Hier hielt Buddha nach seiner Erleuchtung seine erste Predigt und legte fünf Begleitern in einem Hirschpark die Vier Edlen Wahrheiten dar.

Der Dhamek-Stupa markiert den Ort, ein 43 Meter hoher Zylinder aus Ziegel und Stein, die heutige Struktur stammt aus etwa 500 n. Chr. Der Chaukhandi-Stupa markiert, wo er diese Begleiter traf. Und die Ashoka-Säule, deren Vierlöwen-Kapitell sich im hiesigen Museum befindet: Diese Schnitzerei ist das Original des Staatsemblems Indiens, das auf jeder indischen Banknote und jedem Pass abgebildet ist.

Das Museum ist klein, hervorragend, und ohne Fotografie.

Kashi Vishwanath

Der Shiva-Tempel im Herzen der Altstadt, eines der zwölf Jyotirlinga, und eine der meistbesuchten religiösen Stätten Indiens. Die Sicherheitskontrolle ist streng, die Schlangen sind lang, und Telefone und Taschen sind nicht erlaubt, lassen Sie sie im Auto.

Die Gassen darum sind für jedes Fahrzeug zu eng und bilden den ältesten bewohnten Teil der Stadt.

Das Boot

Am Dashashwamedh Ghat nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit: gestufte Messinglampen, Glocken, Muschelhörner und Weihrauch, von Priestern in perfekter Einheit vor Tausenden auf den Stufen dargeboten.
