Der Großvater des Taj

Bega Begum beauftragte dies 1565 für ihren Mann, neun Jahre nach seinem Tod, und engagierte einen persischen Architekten für den Bau. Was entstand, war das erste große Mogul-Gartengrab Indiens, und jedes Element, für das der Taj berühmt ist, erscheint hier zuerst: das Grab im Zentrum eines vierteiligen Charbagh, durch Wasserkanäle geteilt, die Doppelkuppel, roter Sandstein mit weißer Marmoreinlegearbeit, die perfekte bilaterale Symmetrie.

Der Taj wurde siebenundsechzig Jahre später begonnen. Hier zuerst zu stehen, verändert, wie man ihn sieht.

Das Gebäude

Achteckig im Grundriss, auf einer fast sieben Meter hohen Plattform, mit Bogennischen an jeder Seite und einer Marmorkuppel, die die erste ihrer Art in Indien war, eine äußere Schale für die Silhouette und eine innere, für die Kammer darunter bemessen.

Im Inneren befinden sich Humayuns Grab und, erstaunlicherweise, mehr als hundert weitere: Dies wurde zur dynastischen Begräbnisstätte, und Mogul-Prinzen, Frauen und Adlige wurden in den folgenden zwei Jahrhunderten in den Kammern um ihn herum bestattet. Es wird manchmal das Schlafsaal der Moguln genannt.

Hier wurde auch der letzte Kaiser, Bahadur Shah Zafar, 1857 von den Briten gefangen genommen, nachdem er am Grab seiner Vorfahren Zuflucht gesucht hatte.

Die Restaurierung

Der Aga Khan Trust for Culture verbrachte ein Jahrzehnt auf diesem Gelände ab 2007, entfernte eine Million Kubikfuß späterer Erdauffüllung, um die ursprünglichen Gartenebenen wiederherzustellen, restaurierte die Wasserkanäle, damit sie wieder fließen, und verlegte das Steinpflaster neu. Es gilt allgemein als die beste Restaurierungsarbeit Indiens.

Das Standortmuseum, 2022 eröffnet und größtenteils unterirdisch, beherbergt Funde aus dem Komplex und ist wirklich gut gemacht.
