Ein Denkmal, richtig erklärt

Qutub Minar sind bei einer Stadtrundfahrt meist zwanzig Minuten. Es verdient zwei Stunden, denn der Komplex rund um den Turm ist dort, wo islamische Architektur in Indien tatsächlich beginnt, und weil das interessanteste Objekt darin nicht das Minarett ist.

Der Turm

1193 von Qutb-ud-din Aibak, dem ersten Sultan von Delhi, begonnen und von seinen Nachfolgern vollendet: 73 Meter geripptes rotes Sandstein und Marmor in fünf sich verjüngenden Stockwerken, jedes mit einem Balkon, jedes in einem leicht anderen Stil, da jedes von einem anderen Herrscher erbaut wurde.

Es ist das höchste Backsteinminarett der Welt. Die koranischen Inschriftenbänder, die daran hochlaufen, sind tief genug geschnitten, um vom Boden aus lesbar zu sein.

Die Innentreppe ist seit 1981 nach einer Massenpanik geschlossen. Niemand geht hinauf.

Quwwat-ul-Islam-Moschee

Der Komplex rund um den Turm, und der Teil, bei dem ein Führer sein Geld wert ist. Es war die erste in Delhi erbaute Moschee, und sie wurde aus dem Stein siebenundzwanzig abgerissener Hindu- und Jain-Tempel zusammengesetzt, was nicht verborgen wird. Man kann die ursprüngliche Schnitzerei an den Säulen sehen, mit abgemeißelten figürlichen Gesichtern.

Das macht es zu einem unbequemen und völlig faszinierenden Gebäude: ein gänzlich islamischer Grundriss, erbaut aus gänzlich hinduistischen Teilen von Handwerkern, die nur eine Art zu schnitzen kannten.

Die eiserne Säule

Sieben Meter Schmiedeeisen, das im Hof steht, im 4. Jahrhundert unter den Gupta-Kaisern gefertigt. Sie steht seit über sechzehnhundert Jahren im Freien und ist kaum gerostet, wegen eines phosphorreichen Films, der sich auf ihrer Oberfläche bildete. Metallurgen veröffentlichen noch immer Arbeiten darüber.

Alai Darwaza und Alai Minar

Das Tor von 1311 mit seinen Hufeisenbögen, und der Stumpf eines zweiten Turms, den Alauddin Khalji begann und doppelt so hoch bauen wollte. Er starb; er steht bei 25 Metern.
