El pequeño detalle que hace que esto funcione: su conductor le lleva hasta la estación de Nizamuddin y encuentra con usted su vagón y su asiento. Las estaciones de tren indias no son intuitivas, los paneles de andén son escuetos, y un vagón reservado en un tren de catorce vagones nunca está donde uno espera.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan lo empezó en 1632, el año siguiente a la muerte de Mumtaz Mahal al dar a luz a su decimocuarto hijo. Veinte mil obreros y veintidós años; el mármol llegó en carreta de bueyes desde Makrana, a 400 km, en Rajastán.

Las partes que merece la pena que le señalen: la caligrafía labrada en letras cada vez más grandes para que parezca de la misma altura desde el suelo; las incrustaciones de pietra dura, donde una sola flor puede llevar sesenta piedras distintas; los cuatro alminares, inclinados mínimamente hacia fuera para que un terremoto los dejara caer lejos de la tumba; el truco óptico de la puerta Darwaza-i-Rauza, donde el Taj parece más pequeño a medida que uno se acerca.

Y el cenotafio de Shah Jahan, lo único de todo el edificio colocado fuera del eje central, añadido junto al de su esposa por Aurangzeb.

El Fuerte de Agra

Una ciudad amurallada de arenisca roja empezada por Akbar en 1565, con los palacios de mármol de su nieto dentro: el Diwan-i-Am, el Khas Mahal, el Sheesh Mahal, y el Musamman Burj, donde ese nieto pasó sus últimos ocho años preso de su propio hijo, con el Taj a la vista río abajo.
