Tres monumentos, un coche, un día

La mayoría de las excursiones desde Delhi hacen el Taj y el fuerte. Añadir el Baby Taj es lo que hace que esta merezca sus once horas, porque es el edificio del que el Taj aprendió y casi siempre está vacío.

La carretera

Recogida temprana en Delhi, y luego la Yamuna Expressway, una carretera moderna de seis carriles, de tres a tres horas y media con una parada.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan lo empezó en 1632, el año siguiente a la muerte de Mumtaz Mahal al dar a luz a su decimocuarto hijo. Veinte mil obreros y veintidós años; el mármol llegó en carreta de bueyes desde Makrana, a 400 km, en Rajastán.

El Fuerte de Agra

Más una ciudad amurallada que un fuerte, dos kilómetros y medio de arenisca roja empezados por Akbar en 1565, con los palacios de mármol de Shah Jahan dentro: el Diwan-i-Am, el Khas Mahal, el Sheesh Mahal.

Y el Musamman Burj, la torre octogonal donde Aurangzeb tuvo preso a su padre los últimos ocho años de su vida, con el Taj visible río abajo.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, el Baby Taj

Al otro lado del Yamuna. Nur Jahan lo mandó construir entre 1622 y 1628 para su padre: el primer edificio mogol enteramente de mármol, y el primero en la India en usar pietra dura. Más pequeño que el Taj, de labra más fina, y tranquilo.
