Cómo va el día
Recogida en el hotel en cualquier punto de Delhi. La autopista Yamuna llega a Agra en unas tres horas en vehículo privado con aire acondicionado, y merece la pena salir temprano: el Taj a las siete es más fresco, más vacío y está mucho mejor iluminado que el Taj a las once.
En el Taj Mahal, tu guía te lleva por la entrada de la Gran Puerta, donde la cúpula aparece por primera vez encuadrada en el arco y la escala se entiende de verdad. Después los jardines charbagh y el largo estanque, la plataforma de mármol, y el interior del mausoleo con sus cenotafios y sus celosías jali.
El detalle que se queda con la gente: la pietra dura, piedra semipreciosa cortada y engastada a mano en el mármol, con jaspe del Punjab, jade de China, turquesa del Tíbet y lapislázuli de Afganistán. Y la caligrafía del gran arco, agrandada a medida que sube para que se lea uniforme desde el suelo.
Sigue el Fuerte de Agra, donde el Musamman Burj, la torre octogonal de mármol en la que su hijo Aurangzeb confinó a Shah Jahan, mira al otro lado del Yamuna la tumba que él levantó para su esposa. Estar ahí de pie es lo que hace que el Taj cale.
