De Delhi al Ganges y de vuelta en un día

Un vuelo temprano de norte a este, unos noventa minutos, luego un día completo en tierra con coche y guía, y el vuelo de la tarde de regreso. Es la única forma de ver Varanasi sin sacrificar dos días de viaje.

La barca

El centro de todo. Un paseo en barca a remo a lo largo de los ghats, donde todo el frente fluvial se lee como una sola fachada de piedra continua, tal como fue concebida para ser vista desde el agua. Los palacios sobre las escalinatas fueron levantados por maharajás de toda la India, cada uno queriendo una casa en este río.

Al amanecer, la ciudad se vuelve hacia el sol naciente: miles de personas bañándose, lavando ropa, rezando y practicando yoga en las escalinatas a la vez. Por la tarde, lámparas salen al agua en barquitas de hojas.

Manikarnika está en este tramo. Sus piras de cremación arden sin interrupción desde hace siglos, porque los hindúes creen que morir en Varanasi pone fin al ciclo de reencarnación.

Fotografiar allí está prohibido. Es absoluto, y son funerales.

Ganga Aarti

En el ghat de Dashashwamedh: sacerdotes sobre plataformas elevadas con lámparas de latón escalonadas, caracolas, campanas e incienso, moviéndose al unísono exacto, frente a miles de personas en las escalinatas y en barcas.

Sarnath

A diez kilómetros, donde Buda pronunció su primer sermón tras la iluminación. La estupa de Dhamek marca el lugar; el museo alberga el capitel del león de Ashoka, el original del emblema que figura en cada billete y pasaporte indio.

Kashi Vishwanath

Uno de los doce jyotirlinga, en el corazón de la ciudad antigua. La seguridad es estricta, sin teléfonos, sin bolsos, y los callejones alrededor son demasiado estrechos para cualquier vehículo.
