Sin fuertes de Rajastán ni Taj en esta ruta. En su lugar, va hacia el este, a Uttar Pradesh: la ciudad habitada más antigua de la India, la ciudad con el templo más disputado del país, y la última gran ciudad cortesana de los estados sucesores mogoles.

Varanasi

Vuelo desde Delhi. La ciudad reivindica tres mil años de habitación continua, y lo demuestra.

Un paseo en barca al amanecer por los ghats es la experiencia central, todo el frente fluvial se vuelve hacia el amanecer mientras miles de personas se bañan, lavan y rezan en las escalinatas. Por la noche, la Ganga Aarti en Dashashwamedh, realizada con lámparas escalonadas y campanas por sacerdotes que se mueven al unísono.

Ayodhya

La capital de Awadh, y un registro completamente distinto: cortesano, sin prisas, y famoso por sus modales.

El Bara Imambara con su Bhul Bhulaiya, un laberinto de 489 puertas idénticas en los muros sobre el salón, realmente se necesita el guía. El Chota Imambara, el Rumi Darwaza, y la Residency en ruinas, todavía marcada por el asedio de 1857.
