El templo que llevó cinco años y nada de acero

Akshardham se terminó en 2005 en la orilla este del Yamuna, y las cifras son la forma más sencilla de entenderlo: 234 columnas talladas, 148 elefantes de piedra, todos distintos, nueve cúpulas, y ni un gramo de acero estructural ni cemento en ninguna parte del monumento principal.

Se construyó con arenisca rosa de Rajasthan y mármol de Carrara italiano siguiendo los métodos tradicionales del shilpa shastra, piedra tallada, esculpida y ajustada como se construían los templos hace mil años, por unos siete mil artesanos y un gran número de voluntarios.

La tarde

Recogida en su hotel en un coche con aire acondicionado. Su guía explica la construcción durante el trayecto, lo que resulta útil, porque el edificio en sí tiene muy poca señalización.

En el interior, el Mandir con su galería tallada, el pedestal Gajendra Pith con elefantes en la base, 3.000 toneladas de piedra que narran historias de elefantes de la mitología india, y el Narayan Sarovar, el estanque rodeado de 108 cabezas de vaca de latón y lleno con agua de 151 ríos y lagos sagrados.

La fuente musical

Tras el anochecer, en el Yagnapurush Kund, el mayor aljibe escalonado de su tipo, construido con 2.870 escalones alrededor de un loto central. Agua, luz y sonido componen un espectáculo de unos quince minutos que narra una historia de los Upanishad.

Antes de salir

La seguridad es de nivel aeroportuario y la lista de prohibiciones es absoluta: sin teléfonos, sin cámaras, sin bolsos, sin electrónica, sin comida. Hay taquillas gratuitas en la entrada, y la fila para usarlas es la parte más larga de la tarde. Deje todo en el coche si puede.

Se exige vestimenta modesta, hombros y rodillas cubiertos para todos. En la entrada se prestan chales.

Cerrado los lunes. El complejo cierra bastante temprano, así que el espectáculo de la fuente es lo último de la noche.

Fotografiar en el interior es imposible. Esa es la regla, y mejor saberlo antes que en la puerta.
