La versión larga, y los dos lugares que la justifican

Este es el Triángulo de Oro con Khajuraho y Varanasi añadidos, y esos dos son la razón para pasar diez días en lugar de cinco. Ambos están muy al este del triángulo, por lo que el itinerario usa un vuelo y un tren en lugar de ir por carretera.

Delhi, Agra, Jaipur

El circuito estándar con el tiempo adecuado: Qutub Minar, la tumba de Humayun, la Jama Masjid y Chandni Chowk; el Taj Mahal y el fuerte de Agra; Fatehpur Sikri; luego el fuerte de Amber, el City Palace, el Jantar Mantar y el Hawa Mahal.

Khajuraho

Los reyes Chandela construyeron aquí unos ochenta y cinco templos entre 950 y 1050. Veinticinco sobreviven, cubiertos de algunas de las esculturas más finas de la India, dioses, músicos, animales, vida cotidiana, y los grabados eróticos que suponen quizá una décima parte del total y toda la reputación.

Los templos quedaron engullidos por el bosque tras la caída de los Chandela y no se redescubrieron hasta 1838, razón por la que el grabado es tan nítido como es.

Kandariya Mahadeva, en el grupo occidental, es la obra maestra: una montaña de arenisca de 646 figuras que se eleva en etapas deliberadas hacia el shikhara. Un guía importa aquí más que en ningún otro lugar de este viaje, porque la iconografía es densa y no está etiquetada.

Varanasi

Luego hacia el este, a la ciudad habitada continuamente más antigua de la India. Los hindúes creen que morir aquí pone fin al ciclo de reencarnación, así que las piras de cremación en Manikarnika arden sin interrupción desde hace siglos.
